Navigating Emotional Overwhelm and Stress
Have you ever noticed how we talk about being overwhelmed or underwhelmed, but we never say we are whelmed? Well, not in my world. I got curious about why and how that relates to therapy.
While The Grammarphobia Blog explains the witty history of these words, it got me thinking about our internal maps, warning signs, and where we go when life feels like too much. Here is a short reflection on trying to find the turning… yet searching for it is technically resistance to what is.
Working with our emotions rather than against them is the path to Whelm. It’s not about letting them control us or us trying to control them. It’s about listening to them, honouring their existence and choosing what to do next.
Where’s Whelm?
I’ve visited Overwhelm
many times, and Underwhelm just as many.
many times, and Underwhelm just as many.
Yet never
visited Whelm —
Not that I remember.
visited Whelm —
Not that I remember.
Surely it’s
somewhere in the middle?
Or have I gone past the turning?
Missed a warning sign, perhaps?

Or have I gone past the turning?
Missed a warning sign, perhaps?
A map would be handy, I reckon
Does Whelm exist at all? I ask.
Does anybody else remember?
Does anyone know what it’s like?
Is it even worth a mention?
Is it full of wonders,
Dangers best not known?

Are Under- and Overwhelm
the safe bets after all
and worth their weight in gold.
and worth their weight in gold.
How do I find out?
I simply have to know.
I can then give up my yearning for Whelm,
or pack my bags and go.

A Reflective Note on Emotional Overwhelm and Stress
In my somatic practice, I often sit with clients who feel trapped in an exhausting cycle, oscillating between the hyper-arousal of Overwhelm and the frozen, shut-down state of Underwhelm. Searching for that elusive, calm middle ground where we can finally feel safe is why most turn to counselling in the first place.
Yet, as the intro highlights, sometimes the desperate search for that perfect state is simply a form of resistance to where we are right now. True regulation is about learning to expand what our bodies can handle in the present moment.
If you are tired of trying to navigate your internal maps alone, we can work together to help you reconnect with all your emotions without them controlling you. As an approved therapist with Anxiety UK, I combine national framework standards with deep bodily awareness.
You can read more about how I use nervous system regulation and body awareness to help you on my Somatic Counselling & Approach Page. Alternatively, feel free to reach out for an informal chat.
